Alternative Bridging Corporation is a principal lender, offering the widest range of short and mid-term products, to the property industry and business community as well as bridging loans to homeowners.

They make regulated and non-regulated loans and are one of the longest established lenders in the industry.

We speak to executive chairman, Brian Rubins:

What is the best thing about being in the bridging and development finance business?

The diversity of what we do, new ideas and challenges daily, working alongside enthusiasts whose glass is always half full.

What keeps you focused?

The opportunities to improve and grow the business by maintaining service levels which are industry leading.

What qualities do you look for in your employees or colleagues?

Enthusiasm and shared principles, people who recognise the value of our brokers and borrowers, and will go the extra mile to satisfy their needs.

Are you an optimist or a pessimist?

Are you joking? To be in the bridging business you must be an optimist and believe the problems will be solved and that the future is bright regardless of BREXIT, elections and COVID-19!

What did you want to be as a child?

I wanted to work in the automotive industry and design cars. I studied engineering and science and within a few weeks recognised no one was less suited to do that than me and so I have been in the property finance business all of my life.

What will be the greatest challenge facing the bridging and development finance industry in the coming months?

Managing the effect of the “interest holidays” and extended redemption dates while being fair to borrowers.

Who or what makes you laugh?

Don Riccles, Jack Benny and Bob Hope, all of blessed memory, who observed and understood human behaviour, and Michael McIntyre who does so now.

Do you dread Monday mornings?

I enjoy recharging my batteries over the weekend and starting the week afresh, ready to face the challenges.

If you enjoy what you do and who you do it with, Mondays are great. If not, it is time to change your career.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I would be 20 years younger and able to do again what I have done over the past two decades, but better!

With whom would you most like to have dinner?

Visiting a restaurant without social distancing for a romantic dinner with my wife would be the icing on the cake.
