Tony Sanchez speaks to Raphael Benggio, head of regulated underwriting.

What is the best thing about being in the bridging finance business?

I love the fast-paced nature of our industry. The urgency of working on a time-critical transaction and getting it completed within the required timescales to assist a borrower, is very rewarding.

The past year has shown how adaptable and resilient we are and how collectively we can overcome the challenges that are thrown our way. It is a pleasure to be a part of this industry.

What keeps you focused?

I am very target driven. Nothing keeps me more focused than aiming to not just hit that target, but to exceed it.

I am lucky enough to work with some brilliant individuals in my team at MT Finance and a big part of my role that keeps me focused is ensuring that I provide them with the support and training to allow them to flourish and excel in their roles.

What qualities do you look for in your employees or colleagues?

Ambition, tenacity, and work ethic.

I personally think these attributes are fundamental to an individual’s success in any line of work, but especially in the short-term finance industry.

I believe that if you want to achieve anything in life you need to have a strong work ethic.

Being tenacious and self-motivated will help you grab opportunities when they come along and ensure you make the most of them.

Are you an optimist or a pessimist?

I try to be an optimist as much as possible, both personally and professionally.

However, I’ve been trained to always consider the worst-case scenario in any situation – so I guess I have a ‘hope for the best, plan for the worst’ kind of mentality.

What did you want to be as a child?

Batman.

I guess I’m one of the lucky ones that had their dream come true.

What will be the greatest challenge facing the bridging finance industry in the coming months?

I think our industry will continue to be faced with numerous challenges over the coming months while we return to some sort of normality – whatever that will look like.

At MT Finance, we have proven that we can be both robust and flexible to help us overcome any challenge that is thrown our way.

Similarly, we are fortunate to be in a brilliant position to take advantage of any opportunities that may arise in the near future.

Who or what makes you laugh?

Not going to lie, I love a good meme.

Do you dread Monday mornings?

Absolutely not. I love what I do and coming into work and working with my team every day is a pleasure.

If you dread Mondays, you probably don’t enjoy what you do and are in the wrong line of work.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

Not a lot to be honest – none of us are perfect and I think it’s our quirks that make us interesting.

With whom would you most like to have dinner?

Oh, there are so many but I think I have to go with Sir David Attenborough.

The man is a living legend. He has influenced and inspired generations with his work and I could listen to him tell his stories for hours.
