The Five Minute Interview with Nigel Payne, Managing Director, TFC Homeloans

They offer a full range of financial solutions, including Second Charge Loans, Bridging Finance, Commercial and First Charge Lending.

We speak to managing director, Nigel Payne:

What is the best thing about being in the bridging finance business?

The people who are introducing the cases to us and the variety of the types of cases referred to us.

It never ceases to amaze me at the type of deals we are asked to look at for brokers and the breadth of solutions we can find to satisfy each client’s needs.

We have come across some weird and wonderful deals and the challenge of creating solutions to make those deals come to fruition and help meet a client’s expectations gives a real sense of satisfaction.

What keeps you focussed?

I love what I do and see new challenges every day, so I never stop learning. Yesterday’s problems are in the memory bank but today’s and tomorrow’s opportunities are exciting.

What qualities do you look for in your employees or colleagues?

A can-do attitude is a must. I expect openness, honesty and integrity at all times. This industry is still a people business and people only deal with those they respect, trust and like.

Are you an optimist or a pessimist?

Optimist! My glass is never half full, it’s overflowing! There is one exception to that rule and it comes from being a Man City supporter for years.

What did you want to be as a child?

I know it sounds really boring but I loved maths and economics at school and always thought I would be an accountant.

What will be the greatest challenge facing the bridging finance industry in the coming months?

The market is full of opportunities at the moment, from clients, lenders and even the regulator. It’s about choosing which to focus on and which aren’t priorities.

For example, we have the Mortgage Credit Directive coming in March next year and that will have a significant impact on the wider industry and the roles that firms and individuals will play in the market.

At TFC we see this as a clear business opportunity, rather than simply a set of rules.

Who or what makes you laugh?

It has to be Peter Kay. I can laugh at him even when he hasn’t said anything. Although having seen Mrs Brown’s Boys live recently it comes a close second.

Do you dread Monday mornings?

No I love Monday mornings. It’s the Sunday night before that I find irritating as I just want to get on with Monday.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

Most people who really know me say I am not a particularly emotional person, so perhaps I would work on that.

Having said that, my son was recently accepted into the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, and that did move me to tears. So there is a speck of emotion in me somewhere!

With whom would you most like to have dinner?

My friends and family (and Peter Kay). There’s nothing better than having great people around, with whom you’ve shared life’s experiences.
