Law firm DWF and Aldermore Bank teamed up to support a scheme designed to help youngsters develop their language and communication skills to enhance their career prospects.

The firms backed the first SKILL! Programme in Manchester, a one-day event comprising a series of workshops for 15 and 16-year-olds.

The teenagers worked in small groups to develop their communication, presentation and inter-personal skills, guided by more than 20 mentors from DWF and Aldermore.

To round off the workshops, each group created a short Dragons’ Den-style pitch to business experts and entrepreneurs in the ‘Tiger’s Cage’.

The panel included DWF’s head of banking and finance Andrew Gregory, who said: “It was great to be involved with this project and the young people who attended really honed their skills throughout the day.

“It is vital that young people are taught the skills that will make them ready for the world of work and impressive candidates for employers.”

His panel colleagues included Aldermore’s head of savings Simon Healy and Phil Jones, of Brother UK.

Patrick Philpott, founder of VisionPath Education, the company behind the SKILL! Programme, said there would be many more events in the region in the future.

SKILL! was launched in London in 2008 before being rolled out in other cities.
