Construction work begins at Carnforth Business Park

Construction work has begun on Strong Developments’ 22-acre Carnforth Business Park in north Lancashire reports BusinessDesk.com.

The firm has appointed Nelson-based Barnfield Construction on phase one of the development, which is on a site at Kellet Road in Carnforth fronting junction 35 of the M6 motorway.

The site had been earmarked for development for several years, but planning approval for a new business park was only gained from Lancaster City Council in July. It is hoped that the park could bring up to 200 new jobs to the area.

The first phase involves the development of 10 of the 22 acres of land. Four firms have already agreed deals to take space at the park, including Havwoods Floorings which is to relocate from Preston next year into a new distribution warehouse and office unit.

Its director, Simon Whiley, said:

“We have been looking to relocate to the Carnforth area for the last five years.

“This site is ideally situated close the main motorway network and provides the ideal opportunity for our business to expand and improves accessibility to our suppliers and customers.”

Tim Webber, chairman of Barnfield Construction, said:

“We are delighted to have been selected as main contractor at competitive tender to carry out the phase 1 development of this very prestigious development.

“We’re looking forward to working in partnership with Strong Developments and are keen to develop a long term working relationship, which will hopefully lead to us working with them on the future phases within the park.”

Enabling works have already begun at the site and it is expected that building will commence next spring once infrastructure works have been completed. Havwoods’ unit is likely to be the first to complete in late August 2012.

A masterplan for phase two of the project is currently being created by Lancaster-based JMP Architects.  The sole agent for the scheme is Preston-based property consultancy Eckersley.
