Peter McDermid, Scotland BDMShawbrook is a specialist savings and lending bank that offers a straightforward, no-nonsense alternative to the high street.

We speak to Business Development Manager for Scotland, Commercial Mortgages, Peter McDermid:

What is the best thing about having a presence in the bridging finance business?

The best thing about being in the bridging industry is being able to provide practical, well-priced funding solutions to clients wishing to grow their property investment portfolios or trading businesses.

What keeps you focussed?

I have a strong desire to be the best I can be and a drive to be successful. I also have a young family and they keep me focussed.

What qualities do you look for in your employees or colleagues?

A positive, enthusiastic attitude is a must. I’m of the opinion that attitudes can be contagious and successful people are surrounded by positive people.

Are you an optimist or a pessimist?

Always an optimist.

What did you want to be as a child?

A professional footballer. Perhaps I was too optimistic with that ambition…

What will be the greatest challenge facing the bridging industry in the coming months?

The bridging market continues to expand, and with more investors entering the market competition is fierce. Lenders will need to continue to innovate and evolve, whilst ensuring they focus on good customer outcomes.

Who or what makes you laugh?

My three-year-old son, Finlay.

Do you dread Monday mornings?

Not any more. I’ve recently joined Shawbrook and the move has reignited my enthusiasm for my work so I’ve enjoyed every minute so far.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I’d be three stone lighter but because I enjoy eating and cooking so much, it’s not going to happen any time soon.

With whom would you most like to have dinner?

Sir Alex Ferguson. I’m not a United fan but Fergie is a legend in the world of football and he has been massively successful for an extended period of time.
